In 2019, the carrier changed an indicator on some Android phones and iPhones to make it look like those phones may have connected to 5G networks. It used the label “5G E,” which made those phones look like they have connected to a 5G cell tower .

AT&T’s 5G E network stands for 5G Evolution, and it’s just a rebranded version of AT&T’s LTE Advanced Pro network that AT&T customers were using before the iOS update . AT&T chose to rename its LTE Advanced Pro network to 5G E because LTE Advanced Pro is said to be a stepping stone towards 5G.

So then what’s 5GE? AT&T’s 5GE network is merely a slightly faster LTE network . You’re still connecting to the same network as before, but through a combination of 4×4 MIMO and 256 QAM, some phones might see faster speeds in some areas. It’s basically marketing lingo.
