What is the difference between DVB-S and DVB-S2?

DVB-S stands for Digital Video Broadcasting – Satellite and it is the standard for broadcasting a TV signal over the satellite. This system transmits digital audio and video signals in the MPEG format. DVB-S2 is an enhancement of DVB-S which improves the efficiency and reliability of the broadcast channels .

DVB-S2 is able to achieve about a 30% increase in spectral performance compared to the original DVB-S . This allows for an increase in bit rate over the same DVB-S frequency bandwidth. In fact, it comes close to the Shannon Limit, the theoretical maximum information transfer rate in a channel for a given noise level.
