In May, the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) had allotted spectrum to Reliance Jio, Bharti Airtel, and Vodafone Idea to conduct 5G trials in the 700 Mhz, 3.5 GHz, and 26 GHz bands across select cities for six months. It was to end in November 2021, but the DoT extended the trial period to May 2022 .

Under ideal conditions, the 5G speed should in future reach up to 10 Gbit/s , the equivalent of a 20-fold increase. Just how fast 10 Gbit/s really is can be demonstrated by a simple example. A user takes around 13 minutes to download the content of a DVD (4.7 GB) over a DSL line with a bandwidth of 50 Mbit/s.
