What are the physical channels?

There are three types of logical channels: traffic channels (TCHs), control channels (CCHs), and the cell broadcast channel (CBCH) .

According to the 3GPP standards [14], the logical channel types are: Broadcast Control Channel (BCCH), Paging Control Channel (PCCH), Common Control Channel (CCCH), Dedicated Control Channel (DCCH), Multi-cast Control Channel (MCCH), Dedicated Traffic Channel (DTCH), and Multicast Traffic Channel (MTCH).

1.1 Logical Control Channels: Common Control Channel (CCCH) – common to multiple UE’s . Dedicated Control Channel (DCCH) – used to transmit dedicated control information for a particular UE . Multicast Control Channel (MCCH) – used for transmit information for Multicast reception.

There are three different channel types defined in LTE – logical channels, transport channels, and physical channels, each associated with a service access point (SAP) between different layers. These channels are used by the lower layers of the protocol stack to provide services to the higher layers.

A logical channel is defined by the type of information it carries and is generally classified as a control channel, used for transmission of control and configuration information necessary for operating an LTE system, or as a traffic channel, used for the user data.

A physical radio channel is a radio frequency or pair of frequencies that is allocated by the regulatory body to an agency for communication . Simply put, this means in direct radio to radio communication the same frequency may be used for reception and transmission.
