What are the components of UMTS explain in detail?

UTRAN (short for “‘UMTS Terrestrial Radio Access Network”) is a collective term for the network and equipment that connects mobile handsets to the public telephone network or the Internet .

UMTS specifies a complete network system, which includes the radio access network (UMTS Terrestrial Radio Access Network, or UTRAN), the core network (Mobile Application Part, or MAP) and the authentication of users via SIM (subscriber identity module) cards.

The UMTS network is divided into two logical networks, i.e., core network (CN) and radio access network (RAN) . The CN and RAN are connected via an open interface. The network architecture is continuously evolving to enable a smooth transition from 2G to 3G, leveraging existing and new technologies.
