What are the 5G standards?

5G can be implemented in low-band, mid-band or high-band millimeter-wave 24 GHz up to 54 GHz . Low-band 5G uses a similar frequency range to 4G cellphones, 600–900 MHz, giving download speeds a little higher than 4G: 30–250 megabits per second (Mbit/s).

South Korea and China currently lead in 5G network coverage while Europe lags. But China’s big three telecom companies have slowed investments in 5G networks in 2021.

Of particular interest for 5G are IEEE 802.11ad , and the follow-up project P802. 11ay, which support extremely high individual throughput in the millimeter-wave bands that are a focus of some 5G interest.
