SGSN helps in the services within a network , whereas GGSN helps in the gateway outside the network. Also, the Packet Control Unit or PCU is present in the network that helps to determine where the data should be routed. The Gateway GPRS Support Node (GGSN) is the central element within the UMTS packet switched network . It handles inter-working between the UMTS packet switched network and external packet switched networks, and can be considered as a very sophisticated router.

SGSN and GGSN are used for connecting our cell phones to mobile internet through GPRS, EDGE, HSPA and HSPA+ technologies in 2G GSM and 3G UMTS networks. The gateway GPRS support node (GGSN) converts the incoming data traffic coming from the mobile users through the Service gateway GPRS support node (SGSN) and forwards it to the relevant network, and vice versa. The GGSN and the SGSN together form the GPRS support nodes (GSN) .
