Shortwave radio frequencies

There is no standard cut-off for the near-infrared range; therefore, the shortwave radiation range is also variously defined. It may be broadly defined to include all radiation with a wavelength of 0.1μm and 5.0μm or narrowly defined so as to include only radiation between 0.2μm and 3.0μm.

“Media Network” began in 1981 as a weekly shortwave program; in 2000 that show ended in favor of its current online presence. “Other regions vary from country to country,” said Sennitt. “Shortwave is still significant in much of Africa, South Asia and parts of Latin America .”

Over the years, people have relied on shortwave radio for broadcasting voice and news to listeners over massive areas – even spanning continents. Other uses include over-the-horizon radar, two-way international communication, and diplomatic communication.

By one or more reflections between the earth and the ionosphere, a short-wave radio signal can be received at long distances from the transmitter. And medium wave or mediumwave (MW) is a part of the Medium frequency (MF) radio band used for AM broadcasting.

Shortwave and longwave radiation interacts with the earth and atmosphere in different ways. Shortwave radiation (visible light) contains a lot of energy; longwave radiation (infrared light) contains less energy than shortwave radiation (shortwave radiation has a shorter wavelength than longwave radation).

There are noticeable differences between the two. Modern digital shortwave radios have advanced components that filter and process signals better and reproduce higher quality audio . They can also feature single sideband (explained below), while analog radios can’t.
