Is Swing deprecated?

Swing is deprecated or outdated technology although you can learn if it is demand of your new organization. If you are developing any application from scratch you can think of JavaFx. If you are enhancing or modifying existing Swing application then you can still use JavaFx with Swing.

Swing is fine for simple games , but if you really care about performance of redrawing, you should probably take a look at one of the frameworks based on OpenGL. Examples: http://www.lwjgl.org/ – quite a low level library but very fast.

Swing is still used heavily , and will continue to be for a long while — after all, it was the only choice for Java for a loooong time. JavaFX , however, is refreshingly nice, and very-much-so worth learning.
