India spectrum auction 2021

A spectrum auction is a process whereby a government uses an auction system to sell the rights to transmit signals over specific bands of the electromagnetic spectrum and to assign scarce spectrum resources .

The amount of spectrum used for the transmission of a radio signal. For example, a 2G (GSM) channel is 200 kHz wide , a 3G (WCDMA) channel is 5 MHz wide and a 4G (LTE) channel can be up to 20MHz wide.

A frequency spectrum in mobile communications is the range of radio frequencies allocated to each mobile network operator (MNO) in their country of operation for transmitting and receiving their RF signals . An MNO can add more cells with more spectrum to improve network capacity and coverage.

In the spectrum auctions scheduled to begin on March 1, the government plans to sell spectrum for 4G in the 700, 800, 900, 1,800, 2,100, 2,300, and 2,500 MHz frequency bands . The reserve price of all these bands together has been fixed at Rs 3.92 lakh crore.7 Oca 2021

Spectrum refers to the invisible radio frequencies that wireless signals travel over . Those signals are what enable us to make calls from our mobile devices, tag our friends on Instagram, call an Uber, pull up directions to a destination, and do everything on our mobile devices.

Today, a majority of commercial 5G networks rely on spectrum in the 3.5 GHz range (3.3 GHz-4.2 GHz) . This momentum makes it vital that regulators assign as much contiguous 5G spectrum as possible in the range. However, 5G needs more mid-band spectrum to maintain quality of service and meet growing demand.
