The International Telecommunication Union (ITU) is an agency of the United Nations (UN) whose purpose is to coordinate telecommunication operations and services throughout the world . Originally founded in 1865, as the International Telegraph Union, the ITU is the oldest existing international organization.

India has been elected as a Member of the International Telecommunications Union (ITU) Councilfor another 4-year term (2019-2022) .

In addition to its 193 member states , ITU brings together more than 700 sector members and associates from industry, international and regional organisations, as well as more than 150 from academia. The ITU is the United Nations specialised agency for information and communication technologies.
