How are beats related to frequency?

The beat frequency is always equal to the difference in frequency of the two notes that interfere to produce the beats . So if two sound waves with frequencies of 256 Hz and 254 Hz are played simultaneously, a beat frequency of 2 Hz will be detected.

The time interval between two consecutive maxima or minima is called the beat period. It is also equal to the reciprocal of the beat frequency.

Thus, beats are a form of AMPLITUDE MODULATION . As two frequencies are brought closer together, the beats will gradually slow down and disappear when they become identical.

Binaural beats are best perceived when the carrier and standard tone frequencies are at approximately 400 Hz with differences between the two frequencies of no more than 35 Hz [3].
