Chordotonal organs are structurally complex Type I mechanoreceptors that are distributed throughout the insect body and function to detect a wide range of mechanical stimuli, from gross motor movements to air-borne sounds .

Bees generate sound not only through movement of their wings but also with their thoracic muscles . Although they use these muscles to move their wings, they can uncouple their wings to produce heat and generate acoustic signals. Travelling sound waves have both pressure and particle movement components.22 Şub 2016

The often-quoted rate of honey bee wing beats is 11,400 times per minute, but beekeepers know very well that the sound varies with circumstance, individual colony and even subspecies; reports range from 190 Hz to 250 Hz .

Johnston’s organ, which is located in the second antennal segment and is the largest chordotonal organ, has an auditory function to sense air-borne vibration and is essential to respond to courtship song (Gogendeau and Basto, 2010; Todi et al. 2004).
