The first country to adopt 5G on a large scale was South Korea , in April 2019. Swedish telecoms giant Ericsson predicted that 5G internet will cover up to 65% of the world’s population by the end of 2025.

The long-held market positions of the major telecom-equipment suppliers are shifting as the world’s communications carriers build out their 5G networks. China’s Huawei Technologies Co. continues to lead the $90 billion-a-year market for telecommunications equipment, as it has for the past several years.

All wireless carriers in China are state-owned , which has helped the government to expedite the development of 5G networks, and access to wireless spectrum. It has been argued that early access to 5G would give China an advantage in developing services that can leverage the technology.
