Do routers connect to cell towers?

Mobile devices and cell towers communicate with each other with Global System for Mobile Communications (GSM – see wikipedia article), which does not provide internet protocol, and thus not an internet protocol (IP) address .

Wireless internet uses cell towers to create a WiFi network that your devices connect to. You may have also heard it called mobile broadband internet. In some ways, it’s similar to a hotspot: it uses cell towers, requires a data plan, and has a monthly maximum.

Cell towers are also wired into a cable network , which is, again, more fiber-optic cable. In both cases, those wired connections on the router and the cell tower send your internet activity back into a global network of mostly cables.
