A spectrum auction is a process whereby a government uses an auction system to sell the rights to transmit signals over specific bands of the electromagnetic spectrum and to assign scarce spectrum resources .

Today, a majority of commercial 5G networks rely on spectrum in the 3.5 GHz range (3.3 GHz-4.2 GHz) . This momentum makes it vital that regulators assign as much contiguous 5G spectrum as possible in the range. However, 5G needs more mid-band spectrum to maintain quality of service and meet growing demand.

In the spectrum auctions scheduled to begin on March 1, the government plans to sell spectrum for 4G in the 700, 800, 900, 1,800, 2,100, 2,300, and 2,500 MHz frequency bands . The reserve price of all these bands together has been fixed at Rs 3.92 lakh crore.7 Oca 2021
