Spectrum relates to the radio frequencies allocated to the mobile industry and other sectors for communication over the airwaves .

5G spectrum auction could be held in May this year . 5G roll out is expected to happen in India by the end of 2022. Only 13 metro cities will first get 5G services in India.

On March 1, India concluded its first spectrum auction of 2021 . India’s Department of Telecom (DoT), through a Notice Inviting Applications (NIA) issued in January 2021, had put up spectrum for auction in multiple bands, including 700, 800, 900, 1800, 2100, 2300 and 2500 MHz bands.

The 5G trials story The three private telcos, Reliance Jio, Bharti Airtel and Vodafone Idea , are in the process of conducting trials. Jio is testing its indigenously developed 5G RAN and Core, while Airtel and Vodafone Idea have collaborated with Ericsson and Nokia to test 5G technology and use cases.

The 4G telecommunications network was first introduced in India back in 2012, but only in the form of dongles and modems through TD-LTE by Airtel . 4G took another two years before it was available for mobile networks, as Airtel launched the first 4G mobile network in 2014.

Dish, bidding under the name Weminuche LLC , won 31 MHz in the 3.45 GHz auction compared with 40 MHz at AT&T, 12 MHz at T-Mobile and 17 MHz shared among other bidders, according to New Street.

Reliance Jio Infocomm Ltd said it acquired the right to use spectrum in all the 22 circles or zones across India. In all, it won 488.35 MHz of spectrum, taking up its spectrum footprint by 55 per cent to 1,717 MHz (uplink + downlink).
