The number of live 5G networks increased significantly in Europe and outside Europe since the beginning of 2019. Only Lithuania, Malta and Portugal have not launched 5G services in the EU as at the end of March 2021 .

A 2021 study estimated that between 2021 and 2025, 5G would add up to €1 trillion to the European gross domestic product (GDP) for the period, with the potential to create or transform up to 20 million jobs across all sectors of the economy5.

The 2020 EU Toolbox for 5G security is a set of measures to strengthen security requirements for mobile networks; assess the risks posed by suppliers; limit any dependency on a single vendor and stimulate the EU’s own 5G capabilities .
