Millimeter waves — often referred to as mmWaves or high-band 5G — are frequencies starting at 24 GHz and beyond . As radio waves increase in frequency, each wave narrows in length. Because of its high frequencies, mmWave has a limited range of only 300 to 500 feet and struggles to penetrate buildings.

The 2.4 GHz band provides the most coverage but transmits data at slower speeds. The 5 GHz band provides less coverage but transmits data at faster speeds. The 6 GHz band, introduced with the new WiFi 6E standard, provides the least coverage but transmits data at the fastest speeds of the three frequencies .
