In terms of monitoring wound healing, burns are typically given 3 weeks to heal. If, by the 3-week mark, deep partial thickness or full-thickness burns appear unlikely to heal by secondary intention without contracture, they are debrided and resurfaced with full-thickness skin grafts or local flaps.
