In 1894, Guglielmo Marconi began developing a wireless telegraph system using radio waves, which had been known about since proof of their existence in 1888 by Heinrich Hertz, but discounted as a communication format since they seemed, at the time, to be a short range phenomenon.

A wireless network connects computers without using network cables . Computers use radio communications to send data between each other. You can communicate directly with other wireless computers, or connect to an existing network through a wireless AP.

But there are so many different types of wireless networks — LAN, WAN, PAN, MAN — and so many different standards — B, G, N, AC — that it is hard to figure out which will work best for your needs.

There are four types of wireless networks — wireless local area networks, wireless metropolitan area networks, wireless personal area networks and wireless wide area networks — each with its own function. Below we discuss the different types of wireless networks and the various equipment and connections they require.
